How do I decide which electronic components to buy?

Your current and voltage requirements are likely small so most any switch is ok. Often you can save money and use some salvaged parts. 5 AA cells in series, may be cheaper than the 9 volt battery or the 7.2 volt battery, plus they will supply more current, longer.
