How does the EU parliament actually work?

It's a genuine question for UKIP. Is there any heated debate as there is in most National governments? And if not, why not?. The whole Diaspora of the institution seems to be somehow remote and unaccountable. Is this because of of our insular nationalism or do persons (? 'The Resistance ?) in other member nations have the same outlook as ourselves? Thanks in advance for your interest.
