Do I have to use the comcast Xfinity remote control?

Comcast just recently required that I get the Xfinity cable box which comes with a remote control.. my question is if i have to use it or if there is a way to get my old remote control working with the cable box. The xfinity remote is pretty crappy compared to the universal remote I would like to be using..
