Special education questions?

I have known for awhile that I want to be a teacher but had no Idea what grade or age group. I had an epiphany today, I realized that throughout my school career I have been drawn to the special education kids. In 2nd grade I help a boy with down syndrome get on and off the bus and sat with him each day, 5th grade I ate lunch and played with a severely mentally handicapped boy- I ven worked with his para on coming up with ways to teach him multiplication. In 9th grade I helped a girl with down syndrome pass gym class. I loved my time spent helping these kids and it felt amazing to see their progress. I was toting with geting a professional paraeducator degree which my college offers. Though I wAnted to find out more about being a para. Do you have any say in the kids you work with- I feel relatively comfortable working with kids with mild to moderate handicaps but I am not sure if I will be able to handle emotionally working with the kids who are wheelchair bound for life and have almost no way to communicate. I also think I could handle working with children who display very disruptive behavior and have been rrmoved from a traditional classroom setting. any help or info would be appreciated.
